We've used Kanberra products on our boat for almost 15 years. It all started with the original Kanberra Gel back in 2009 at the Oakland Strictly Sail boat show. These two enthusiastic guys came to our Latitudes & Attitudes booth to show us a new product: Kanberra Gel. The thing that sold us was the "bagel demonstration". They had put a piece of a bagel in two identical, sealed jars for 30 days and documented the results. One had aa small container of Kanberra Gel in it, the other had nothing. After an entire month the bagel with Kanberra Gel looked absolutely normal and edible. But the other bagel was completely covered in fuzzy, multi-colored mold! After explaining how it worked (the evaporative process with tea tree oil), we agreed to test it out back on our boat in the Pacific NW.
It quickly became an indispensable product on our sailboat. When we moved aboard Traveler a couple years later we bulked up and had Kanberra Gel containers in every cabin, every locker, and many other nooks and crannies. From the very beginning we did not had any mold or mildew issues, even living and working aboard our boat 24/7/365. In fact, Lisa always lists Kanberra as one of three "must-haves" for her to comfortably liveaboard a boat (H2Out dehumidifiers and diesel heat being the other two). Specifically for keeping the aforementioned mold and mildew at bay. Another benefit is our floating home never had that "boat smell" that so many people (especially land lubbers) don't like.
Over the years Kanberra has introduced other very effective forms of the proprietary tea tree oil. We now have Kanberra Premium Soap, Kanberra Hand Sanitizer (heavily used during the pandemic!), Kanberra Wipes, the all important and economical Kanberra Refill Pouch, and Kanberra Spray.
The spray became the most often used Kanberra product on our boat. If the engine room door was open for any length of time, Lisa would always smell "engine room" (what other folks might call "boat smell"). A couple of sprays in the air and the odor was gone. We'd use it if I made toast. Lisa says I like my toast burnt, but I insist I just like it toasted. Really well! Couple of sprays, burnt toast smell gone.
But the main use is in the heads. Yes, you know where I'm going with this. It's the #1 use of Kanberra Spray on our boat. Well, actually, that should read the #2 use. Pun intended! We decided to make light of the issue by creating this video:
In a similar vein, a few years ago I was replacing the duck bill valves in the forward head's now-replaced Vacuuflush system - a VERY stinky job! It truly smelled horrible. I was shouldering through the job when I suddenly realized, duh! We have Kanberra Spray! A few spritzes in the air and I was no longer dealing with that lovely sewer smell.
That was a life saver!
A few years ago we got a house about 3/4 of a mile up the road from the marina. We sorta-kinda moved off the boat last year at Halloween. We now have all the same Kanberra products in use around the house. And yes, Kanberra Spray still gets the most use!
The moral of this story is: Kanberra Gel is a must-have for any boat we have, whether we live aboard or not. And Kanberra is just as useful around the house, and in RVs, too. There is a common misconception among boaters in North America that because the gas and diesel we buy is essentially the cleanest in the world, we needn't worry about the dreaded "water-in-the-fuel" problem encountered in other countries. And though the fuels we buy in the U.S. and Canada are typically fine, once we have it in our tanks we still need to guard against water contamination and the subsequent problems those can manifest in our engines down the road.
